A Pet’s Ten Commandments

1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years.  Any separation from you is likely to be painful.

2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.

3. Place your trust in me.  It is crucial for my well-being.

4. Don’t be angry with me for long and don’t lock me up as punishment.  You have your work, your friends, your entertainments, but I have only you.

5. Talk to me.  Even if I don’t understand your words, I do understand your voice when speaking to me.

6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.

7. Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I could hurt you, and yet, I choose not to.

8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me.  Perhaps I’m not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long, or my heart might be getting old or weak.

9. Please take care of me when I grow old.  You too, will grow old.

10. On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please.  Never say you can’t bear to watch.  Don’t make me face this alone.  Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you so.

  1. Christal, my darling died of Lupus an AID, 5 years ago. I recently got a new Sheltie, 2 1/2 mo Dolly. I still miss Chrissy. I was there with her at The End. She may remember how I treated her, but I know the Christ in Christal knows how much I loved her and forgives me for any short commings in my human-ness.

  2. This is a list for every pet owner. It brought tears and a lump in my throat.

  3. I will admit that this made me bawl. Still sniffling. Thank you for sharing.

  4. Major lump in the throat when I read this!

  5. I cried this morning when I read this and the last line stuck in my mind today when we lost our beloved Jack.

  6. I am crying as I read this. How can anyone strike their pet? I will never, never understand that. This should be required reading for anyone who owns a pet.

  7. OMG what a lump in the throat,
    especially the last commandment.
I hope I can be that strong to stay till the last seconds.

  8. This brought tears to my eyes!

  9. Man, talk about a tear jerker, especially the last one. *Sniff-sniff!*

  10. I get misty every time I read this. If only every pet owner had this tattooed on their heart like we do here.
