Dottie: St. Louis Sheltie Rescue

Dottie is a special needs girl looking for that special forever home!  Dottie is a very sweet, 6 yr old sable female that just came into Second Chance Sheltie Rescue.  She is crate trained and has lovely manners.  She gets along well with other dogs and is always looking for a hand to give her some ear scratches!

Dottie had a mammary tumor removed which was cancerous, but thankfully it was not an aggressive form of cancer and all was removed.  She is a breast cancer survivor and wears her pink ribbon proudly!  (She will need a chest x-ray every 6 months for 2 years.)

Dottie also has arthritis in her elbow and hip and will need to be on a joint supplement and possibly some pain medication. Although she is still quite playful!

Sadly, Dottie had also been shot in the foot by some abusive boys.  One toe is partly missing and another (a weight-bearing toe) was broken and never treated.  That toe healed completely crooked and therefore offers no ability to help bear weight on that leg.  This does cause her to limp some.

She would need a house with only one or two steps to the yard — preferably none.  To learn more about her & to see a video of her playing, visit her page at Second Chance Sheltie Rescue.

UPDATE 7/6/11:  Dottie’s was seen here on Sheltie Nation by Suzie in FL.  Her super sweet face could not be resisted & her adoption is now in progress!  Woot!

  1. I just by chance also was looking through photo,s and this one really got to me..Dottie has gone through an incredible lot of things, and I am so happy she is in the process of being adopted..and going to a loving home..Best for little Dottie!

  2. So happy that Dottie’s adoption is in process! Thanks to Sheltie Nation and rescue hearts! Hope both mom and Dottie have a wonderful new life in Florida!

  3. Those boys need to see a psychiatrist to see if they’re showing symptoms of being sociopaths. Either way, they need to have their toes shot off too.

  4. Please keep us updated on precious Dottie’s journey to find a loving permanent home. If any little being deserves to spend the remainder of her life surrounded by love, affection and security – she certainly does. This darling and courageous girl has touched a deep chord in many of us. If my own home and landscaping did not feature numerous stairs – I would eagerly adopt her. Can donations be made specifically toward Dottie’s care?

    • Hi Nickie!

Yes, donations can be made for Dottie’s care and we would greatly appreciate it! You can mail a check to:

      Second Chance Sheltie Rescue
      P. O. Box 1791
      Maryland Heights, MO 63043

Be sure to put on the check in the “note’ section or include a note that the donation goes for Dottie’s care.

Dottie sends you lots of hugs and kisses, Nicki!

  5. I would soo adopt her if i had the time to travel accross the country. I live in southern california and i have a 2 Year old female sheltie that is my everything right now. Dottie story brought a tear to my eye. She seems soo happy and she definately deserves a forever home! I wish i would be able to give her a forever home!

  6. Oh my. Dottie’s story brought tears to my eyes but everything is just going to get better and better for her. As to the boys that shot her — I hope they do not progress to abusing other kids or grow Into abusive teenagers. Let’s pray for them too to turn their lives around. May our patron saint of animals, St. Francis, watch over Dottie and lead the most loving person to her for her forever home. My Danny was abused before I found him and as my vet says he really hit the lottery when I adopted him.

  7. God bless you Dottie….you will find a forever home – you are so beautiful.

  8. Saying the BIGGEST prayer for ~ Dottie Girl ~

She is a trooper, you can see that, praying that she finds a forever loving, caring home!

    Wish I could take her.

    Fran

  9. What a beautiful little girl. I agree with above comments and hope the people who hurt and neglected her get theirs one day. I know God will take care of that for sure. My heart breaks every time I hear about animals being abused, but it is especially torn by anyone hurting a Sheltie. Little Dottie, I know someone will take you into their heart soon. We all are rooting for the best home possible.

  10. Dottie has must about the sweetest face I’ve ever seen! Her eyes say,”are you the one for me?”

  11. I HOPE WHO EVER HURT THIS PRECIOUS SHELTIE WILL BE TREATED THE SAME WAY BUT THREEFOLD. ANYONE WHO HURTS AN ANIMAL SHOULD BE PUNISHED TO THE FULL EXTENT APPROPRIATE. ***** DOTTIE, YOU ARE ONE OF THE BRAVEST, MOST BEUATIFUL SHELTIES I HAVE EVER MET OR READ ABOUT. YOUR STORY BROUGHT TEARS TO MY EYES. THE VIDEO AND OTHER PICTURES ARE WONDERFUL SHOWING HOW GOOD YOU ARE AND HOW HAPPY YOU APPEAR TO BE. I WILL PRAY THAT YOU FIND THE LOVING HOME YOU SO DESERVE AND ONE THAT DESERVES YOU. IF I WERE ABLE I WOULD TAKE YOU IN A HEARTBEAT, BUT PERSONAL CIRCUMSTANCES MAKE THAT IMPOSSIBLE. I WISH ONLY THE VERY BEST FOR YOU, DOTTIE, AND THAT YOU LIVE A LONG, HAPPY LIFE WITH A LOVING FAMILY. BLESS YOU, DOTTIE.

  12. What if someone wanted her and lives across the country from there?

    • Contact the rescue, please! :-)

    • That is an easy question to answer Linda!

I live in Colorado and have flown both to Milwaukee for sheltie Leah -14 yrs. old and Dallas for sheltie Barbara -8-1/2 yrs., – who were both in rescue at the time and I found them on the internet just like you noticed Dottie.

Leah & Barbara are both sheltie angels now but each gave more love than words can describe.

BTW -There is a sale on airline tickets right now, — or a drive during this summer would be a great idea!!

Just do it, I know I am glad that I did…….

      Valerie

    • I’m a volunteer with Second Chance Sheltie Rescue in St. Louis and we welcome your application for Dottie. Normally, we serve a 125-mile radius from STL, but there are always exceptions. We have adopted out Shelties to people in Atlanta, Tennessee, and Chicago. You would just need to be willing to make at least one visit here, possibly two. We can usually find another Sheltie rescue in your area to do a home visit.
I briefly fostered Dottie and she is truly the sweetest, gentlest girl you’ll ever meet. I would love to adopt her myself, but I have several steps to the backyard. We all just love her and she deserves to live out the rest of her life as a princess!
Please apply on our website at: http://www.sheltie4me.com

Thanks to everyone for the support!

  13. I hope some angelic person steps forward soon to adopt Dottie, she is a gem. I shake my head at who could possibly shoot any dog let alone one this cute. It’s onward and upward from here!

  14. I agree how can anyone hurt this poor girl. Hang in there Dottie you’ll have a forever home soon.

  15. Hoping she finds her forever home soon! I think it would be a great idea to feature a rescue sheltie more often.

  16. My heart breaks at the sight of her sweet face. How could anyone be so mean!

Hugs to Dottie and fingers crossed that she finds a home soon!

  17. What a sweet girl, hoping for a wonderful forever home for you Dottie!

  18. All fingers and paws crossed that Dottie finds her “forever” home!!
The great video on the Rescue website shows her playing with another sheltie, — but the last photograph shows how happy she really is.
That picture is a MUST SEE!!!

  19. Hugs to Dottie & her foster family! Paws crosssed that she’ll find the best ever home!
