Little Prince Spaghetti
by Joan Gilbert Madsen

Even as a puppy, Little Prince knows exactly what he wants—to be a “Top Show Dog” like his father and grandfather before him. His life is all planned out, until the day his world comes crashing down. A story of hope, humiliation and heart.

Little Prince Spaghetti is a gift book for sheltie lovers, dog lovers, and anyone who likesto cheer for the underdog. Kids love it too. It is written and designed with the feel of an old-time children’s picture book. So curl up with the kids, grandkids or pups and read it out loud.

When you order a new book (not used from a reseller) on Amazon, it comes with a greeting card based on the book’s illustrations.

Joan spent much of her youth training and showing Shelties in 4-H and AKC Jr. Showmanship. Some of her fondest memories are traveling the dog show circuit with her aunt Carol Howell. She went on to have a career in graphic design and illustration but kept her love of Shelties and has always had one as her puppy love.

In addition to Little Prince Spaghetti, Joan has written and/or illustrated two other children’s books: Wallowa Lake–The REAL Story, and ‘Twas the Night Before Round-Up (written by Nancy Attebury).

sashi-coversAnnouncing a 3 rd book in the Sashi series — Sashi and the Puppy Mill Girl (expected availability late August). All three of these delightful, beautifully illustrated children’s books are a must have for Sheltie lovers (of all ages!) and anyone who has ever rescued a Sheltie.

Based on the true story of Cinnamon, one of the “Lancaster 11” rescued from a puppy mill in 2007 by SSPSNJ…

“Anna and her mother love fostering Shelties through Shetland Sheepdog Rescue. By taking care of rescued dogs, they help the dogs become ready to find a forever home. They’ve already adopted two Shelties of their own, Sashi and Buddy, and their newest foster is a shy girl named Cinnamon who’s been rescued from a puppy mill. Neglected and frightened, Cinnamon has a tough time settling into her new home at first but with help from Sashi and Buddy, Cinnamon realizes she doesn’t have to be afraid.”

As with the other Sashi books, a portion of proceeds is donated to Shetland Sheepdog Placement Services of NJ. Sheltie Rescues can contact Linda directly for discount pricing – great fund raising item!

Endorsed by National Sheltie Rescue!

“In Linda Greiner’s third book in the Sashi series we learn about Cinnamon. Sashi has met many foster Shelties, but shy Cinnamon is very special. With the friendship of Sashi and Buddy she blossoms into the happy Sheltie she was meant to be. A story that will touch the hearts of children and adults. All three Sashi books are wonderful stories, beautifully illustrated, and loved by children everywhere.”

It was an early Christmas delivery here at Sheltie Nation Headquarters when the Jones Natural Chew samples arrived! We usually don’t do food or bone reviews here at Sheltie Nation, but the Jones company culture and their line of chews fit nicely with our desire to source all-natural, local, USA made products for our dogs.

Jones Natural Chews, Co. is based out of Rockford, IL and has been family-owned for over 150 years. They manufacture JNC-Logoall-natural (no artificial ingredients added) pet treats and chews. All of their products are 100% sourced here in the USA. They were originally founded as a small meat market with a smokehouse to provide custom butchering and smoking for local farmers. The best cuts of meat also produced the best bones, and word traveled fast that Jones was the place to go to for naturally baked dog chews. Today Jones Natural Chews are available in large stores and small pet boutiques throughout the country.

Canine Christmas Crunchers Stocking

This sweet red and green holiday stocking contained 5 Christmas chews: 1 beef Hoof, 1 Pig Ear, 1 beef Knee Cap, 1 jones1beef Center Bone 4″, and 1 pork K9 Bacon Roll 5″.  The boys here were eager to lend a paw to this product review!

4″ Center Bones

The center Bones are one of Jones top ten sellers. This sample had marrow in the middle of the bone along with tasty meaty pieces left on the outside of the bone. Jones dips these in liquid smoke and then slowly roasts them. These USA all-natural beef femur and tibia bones have no artificial ingredients and are best suited for small to medium size dogs. (Product Info states: 5.5 – 9 oz. each / 4″ long)

Good news is they don’t smell or stain. They were individually vacuum packed in plastic and good sized. I kept an eye on my Shelties while they ate this, but the treats didn’t splinter and I took them away before they got too small. We did get multiple chew sessions out of these bones.jones2

  • They look tasty and do not splinter, unlike regular bones.
  • They are individually wrapped keeping the moisture and flavor fresh.
  • They are tough enough that my dogs can only grind on them but not chew out large chunks to cause chocking.
  • They keep them occupied longer than any of the other tested products.

Sensitive Tummy?

My Shelties have sensitive stomachs.  They tend to get diarrhea if they eat something other than their regular dog food or get too many dog treats. The bones from Jones Natural Chews had enough fatty pieces, skin, and some meat so I was worried they would get an upset stomach.  I let them chew on the knuckle and center bone for a good hour or two and we had no resulting issues. Success!

Rocky’s Rollers Soft Lamb Sausagerollers

These were a BIG hit at Sheltie Nation HQ! Rocky’s Rollers are 7 – 8″ links that are soft and flexible, made with USA lamb. These links are all-natural with no artificial ingredients. All size dogs can enjoy this treat that can be easily broken into small pieces – which is also ideal for training. They come in a resealable bag with a generous portion size and are very easy to feed.

(Ingredients: : lamb, lamb lung, rye flour, glycerin, brown sugar, salt, liquid smoke flavoring, natural mixed tocopherols (preservative), rosemary extract in a collagen casing.)

Candy Canes

This chew is an all-natural USA beef steer pizzle with no artificial ingredients. It is perfectly curled to look like Christmas time’s favorite candy.  I felt these samples were too small for Tyler and Teddy so I did not feed this product.  My guys would have attempted to swallow these in two bites so I was worried about them swallowing or choking on it.  I think the size sampled would be better for a toy sized breed or a Sheltie puppy – under supervision!

Standard Pig Ear & Beef Hoof

The Jones’ Standard Pig Ears and Beef Hooves are baked and contain no artificial ingredients. The standard is smaller than the Premium Pig Ear, which makes them a good size for Shelties. The pig’s ear had to be taken away from my Shelties quickly after starting to chew on it since they were breaking off big pieces and swallowing them. The cow hoof was not as popular with my dogs as all the other products. I’m not sure why. I guess my Shetland Sheepdogs have preferences!

K9 Bacon Roll 5″

The 5″ K-9 Bacon Rolls are all-natural USA pork skin rolled up like a retriever roll. (Product Info: .5 oz. – 1.5 oz. each / 5″ long, and stated best for small to medium size dogs.) We found these to be a good size for our Shelties, but a longer length would give them more chew time. They could easily grasp and hold this bacon roll with their paws.

Where Can I Find Jones Treats?Made in the USA

This link will take you to a store locator. There are stores in all 50 states selling Jones Natural Chews. At the bottom of the locator page is a list of online shops which sell the treats.  Be sure to check out their website to see what other products they have to offer.

Supervise, Supervise, Supervise!

Jones Natural Chews are safer than most because this company tests for splintering. That is reassuring. But there can still be pieces that can be broken off and eaten. We recommend chewing sessions be 100% supervised. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

All-in-all, we were very happy with the shank bone, knee cap bone and Rocky’ Rollers we received from Jones Natural Chews. Tyler and Teddy really enjoyed them. I think I know what is going into their Christmas stockings this year!

When I think back on the day when I almost lost my Sheltie, I still panic at the memory. It was a huge wake up call in how I leash them but also I now had first hand experience with that feeling of helplessness. I was living the nightmare of chasing after a loose, scared Sheltie.

One afternoon about 3 years ago, I took my Sheltie, Tyler, to be groomed.  Never any Sheltie’s favorite thing, but he had been there many times before without issue. This time however I had my hands full with our other Sheltie, Toby and our new puppy Teddy who was in a small travel crate. I had help from my mother on this day, so I thought nothing of carrying Teddy in the crate and walking Toby through the front door ahead of her and Tyler.  What happened next felt like forever in my mind, but lasted only a few minutes.

When she and Tyler went to cross the threshold of the store door, he backed out of his collar. Suddenly realizing he was free, he began darting around the closest cars in the parking lot. I put the carrier down and left my mother and Toby inside the store. I tried to convince Tyler to come back to me, but he obviously still thought he was going to get groomed. The realization that he was free made him become more frightened – running farther from me. Once he heard a big truck go by, he ran from the parking lot and into the road. Within 15 seconds he was out of my sight, running down the double yellow line, up and over a hill.

I panicked and started crying. I felt so helpless to not be able to chase after him on foot and quickly recalled so many stories of missing Shelties on our forums. Tyler is a nervous Sheltie to begin with so I immediately feared the worst. Thankfully I quickly got my wits about me and jumped in my truck, speeding off after him in the direction he ran.

We had an angel looking out for Tyler that day, and I truly believe it was my soul Sheltie, Trevor looking out for him. At that exact moment I got into the truck, there happened to be a break in both directions of traffic. I was able to immediately pull out and drive down the middle of the road, hazard lights flashing and arm waving out the window begging the distant oncoming traffic to stop. Once I caught up to Tyler (who was still running down the double yellow line faster than I ever imagined!) I called his name out the window. Incredibly, he looked over his shoulder, stopped and turned to face the truck. I pulled to a stop and all oncoming traffic stopped for us. I quietly got out of the truck and in the middle of of the road knelt down on my knees. I then opened my arms wide and as cheerfully as I could manage, called his name. He stood there for a second, looked around as if debating what to do but then leapt into my arms!

I was so very, very lucky.

Shetland Sheepdogs have a high rate of “running” behavior once spooked. Many shut down and just keep going even though familiar voices and faces call them back. For this reason many Sheltie rescue groups will not adopt out dogs to families without a fenced yard. But regardless how careful or how well you train your Sheltie not to bolt out the front door (or leave the yard, or chase after a squirrel and jump over the fence), they can get loose.  Enter the new technology of the Nuzzle GPS collar. This amazing product would be a fantastic fit for flight risk Shetland Sheepdogs.

Nuzzle was started by a group of pet lovers and tech enthusiasts with a mission to keep all pets safe, healthy, and happy. The team put together a whole Nuzzle package that includes GPS tracking collar and a smartphone app.

The Nuzzle Collar CollarCloseup

The Nuzzle collar is light, only weighing a few ounces, waterproof, and made of durable nylon. The construction is mostly high impact plastics to keep the weight low. The GPS tracker is contained in a separate rubberized attachment that can be secured to your personal collars and harnesses. The collar is convenient and easy to use. With a removable battery and an additional battery included, you can easily charge it without ever having to remove the collar from your Sheltie.

How Nuzzle is Different

  • No monthly fees: Nuzzle is the ONLY smart pet GPS product on the market that does not require a monthly fee.
  • Easy battery charging: Nuzzle provides the easiest charging experience. The Nuzzle battery is easily removable from the collar, so you can charge it while leaving the collar on your Sheltie. In addition, Nuzzle provides an additional battery with each purchase. That way, the collar is never left uncharged.
  • Geo-fencing: The Nuzzle app allows you to create a virtual fence. If your Sheltie leaves that area, you will be automatically alerted.
  • Impact detection: Nuzzle will notify you if the collar has been hit hard. That way, you can know if your dog is playing too rough or may have gotten into an accident.
  • Waterproof: The collar can survive a rainy day and water splashing.  Just don’t submerge it.
  • Temperature monitoring: The collar can detect temperature. So, if your Sheltie is outside too long in the heat or the cold, you will know.
  • Detachable tracker: The Nuzzle tracker can be detached and reattached to your personal collars and harnesses.

This collar is perfect for any Sheltie owner concerned about safety or who simply wants better monitoring of their pet. Besides high flight risk Shelties, it would be useful for working dogs such as hunting dogs, sport dogs and farm dogs. It can be used with cats too!

You can follow Nuzzle on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook for updates and learn how you can help Nuzzle raise funds for its smart collar. Or, visit Nuzzzle’s Funding Page on Indiegogo to learn more about the campaign and order a Nuzzle collar for your Sheltie!

sashibrothersmlSashi is back – and this time she’s a princess!

Sashi knows what it’s like to be unwanted. She was a rescue Sheltie when Anna and her mother adopted her. After a few years, Sashi’s humans decide to foster rescues until they find permanent homes. Well-trained and confident in her place among her humans, Sashi makes sure the fosters know that she’s the princess of the house. Some of the fosters teach her fun tricks, like climbing snowdrifts. Others—like the one who chases a laser light toy—just seem strange.  But none challenges her ability to rule her home as much as one over sized and rambunctious Sheltie who had to leave his original home due to his bad behavior.

“ A charming tale of friendship between dogs and the love of owners who understand their pets.”    – Kirkus Review

Special Edition Sheltie Nation Die-Cut Decal

Only for a limited time!

If you missed the announcement last week, we are offering a re-print of the special edition decal. The last day to order them will be 8/5. You can click the button below.

This style of decal is the graphic cut out in vinyl with no background, like those you frequently see on car windows. These decals are printed and “weeded” one at a time, so they are much more labor intensive than the peel-and-place stickers. As a result, they cost much more to produce, but the extra price is worth the sharp look.

The cost of these decals will be the same as the last offering, $12.00 USD. (Regular postage to your location will apply.) I will leave the ordering open for two weeks until about 8/5/14 then close it so I can place the order with the printer. You should have your special edition decal in about 3 weeks.

Just click the link below to be taken to the paypal portal. If you want to keep up to date with the conversation about these decals, just visit our forums.
