Boomer

Rest Well Beautiful Boy

Last week, I lost my constant companion and best friend of more than 14 years. Boomer passed away the day after Christmas.

Boomer added so much joy to my life. I can’t imagine a more loyal, sensitive, intelligent friend. It was my pleasure and honor to be with Boomer as he moved so gracefully through all the stages of his life – from inquisitive, goofy puppy to energetic, playful young adult to loving, mature companion. Through it all, Boomer never lost his love of life nor his desire to make me happy. Boomer always had a smile on his face and wag of his tail. And he never missed an opportunity to share his love with me.

One of my favorite moments with Boomer came on an afternoon walk several years ago. We came across a young couple walking their dog in the opposite direction on the other side of the street (we’d seen this pack before but never interacted other than to wave hello). Out of the blue, the man called out, “We love to see you. We call your dog ‘The Smiling, Happy Dog’!” – Boomer in a nutshell! I thanked the couple and leaned over to pet Boomer and tell him what a good dog he was. Knowing he’d done good, Boomer smiled a little brightened, wagged his tail a little harder, and proudly pranced the rest of the way home.

Every day, Boomer taught me something wonderful about love and being a better person. I miss my beautiful boy.

Rest well my friend. Enjoy playing with the other Sheltie Angels. I look forward to being with you again.
