The first place to look is at a Sheltie Rescue Group. There are thousands of homeless Shelties and Sheltie crosses looking for loving homes and warm beds right now!
If you choose to buy a Sheltie puppy from a breeder, please choose wisely. Do your research and make sure you are not supporting a poor backyard breeder or puppy mill. Professional breeders care about the health and well-being of their Shelties, breed to the standard and do not produce puppies for the money.

Finally, NEVER EVER go to a pet store to buy a puppy. ALL puppies sold in pet stores come from puppy mill breeders. Reputable breeders would never allow their puppies to be sold in this manner!
Sheltie rescue organizations take in abandoned, lost and unwanted Shelties. These wonderful people address the dog’s physical as well as psychological needs while finding new, loving homes. They also take the time to determine their personality, so they can be placed with the right family forever!
If you choose to buy a puppy, finding a responsible breeder from whom to purchase your Sheltie is paramount, and not always easy. Many reputable breeders do not advertise in newspapers, and few would post public notices about litters available.
Other Sheltie websites list breeders but here at Sheltie Nation, we will not. We would never promote or give paid exposure to breeders who might not hold to the highest degree of ethics. It would be far too difficult to screen to the high standards we would expect of each breeder that was listed on this site. However, we will give you all the information & tools you need to find the perfect breeder for you!
Your best approach to finding a responsible breeder is through your local all-breed kennel club, your area Sheltie club, or the breeder referral services of the American Shetland Sheepdog Association.
